Plays adapted from textbooks
The easiest source for a play is the textbook. If we take a look at a textbook, we find that in many units the situational context and characters have already been developed. It is up to us if we continue in a similar vein or develop our own context and characters but still adhere to the language focus.

Adaptations of classic stories
If we want to use a classic story, we should find one which suits pupils' interest and ability. Three have been chosen here - 'The Three Little Pigs', 'The Magic Paintbrush' and 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We have chosen them because most pupils know of them and there is a lot of action in them. This gives pupils more confidence and ideas to write the script.

Self-written plays
The idea for the self-written plays could come from any source. 'Bossy Chris', in fact, was inspired by a series of pictures and text and then modified to include a suitable language focus, specific to Key Stage 2.
